Safety Has to Stay Front and Center
|

The FAA’s new flight restrictions are sparking mixed reactions across the cargo industry — but the message is clear: safety must remain at the forefront of everything we do.
Whenever regulations like these roll out, it’s a reminder that no load or schedule is worth a life. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone impacted by this recent tragedy in Louisville. Behind every headline are people — the ones who keep this industry in motion.
This should push all of us to double down on precautions, verification, and transparency across operations. Real leadership in logistics isn’t about volume — it’s about making sure every plane, truck, and warehouse runs with safety as a non-negotiable.

Communication Behind the Wheel: Why English Proficiency Isn’t Just a Checklist
|
(Photo: Jim Allen/FreightWaves)
|
A recent enforcement step in the trucking industry has sidelined more than 7,000 truck drivers so far this year for failing the federal English Language Proficiency (ELP) tests.
Here’s the bottom line: ensuring clear communication behind the wheel isn’t about politics or paperwork—it’s a safety imperative.
Now, let me be clear — I believe opportunity should exist for everyone. I stand with anyone trying to build a better life, support their family, and contribute to this industry. But no opportunity should come at the cost of safety. There can’t be shortcuts when the job involves 80,000 pounds of responsibility moving at 70 miles an hour.
If companies are cutting corners on training or hiring drivers who can’t meet basic communication standards, that’s not just bad business — it’s dangerous. There must be accountability. Carriers and brokerages should face serious penalties if they fail to uphold the checks and balances that keep both drivers and the public safe.
At the end of the day, this isn’t about exclusion — it’s about execution. Safety and opportunity can coexist, but only when the system demands the same standard of excellence from everyone who touches the wheel or a computer that puts that wheel in motion.
