The California Teamsters union sued the DMV on Aug. 5, challenging the process behind the driverless truck framework that took effect April 28 — arguing regulators improperly used an expedited track meant for minor rule changes rather than one with major cost implications.
California’s rules require 1 million testing miles (500,000 with a safety driver, including 100,000 in-state) before fully driverless commercial deployment. 28 companies including Aurora, Kodiak, Gatik and PlusAI hold testing permits, as Congress separately advances the BUILD America 250 Act toward a first federal AV framework.

Hardware · Autonomy Compute
AMD EPYC processors will power Kodiak AI’s seventh-generation autonomous truck platform, marking the first time a driverless trucking company has deployed AMD’s server-class chips in vehicle hardware. Kodiak says the move brings roughly a 25% clock-speed gain at lower power draw, supporting a fleet that’s already logged more than 40,000 driverless hours in the Permian Basin for customers including J.B. Hunt, Werner and IKEA.

AI Ops · Remote Assistance
Houston-based Bot Auto says all of its remote assistance operators — who communicate with first responders and can trigger vehicle shutdowns but never drive the trucks — will stay U.S.-based, a contrast with Waymo’s disclosed use of overseas staff in the Philippines. The move follows a Senate probe into remote-operator practices and a July NHTSA letter pressing AV developers on first-responder interactions.

Autonomous Trucking · Funding
Gatik closed a $200 million Series D led by the Qatar Investment Authority and Koch Disruptive Technologies, with Millennium Management, ARK Invest and Intact Private Capital also participating. The autonomous freight company has completed 85,000 fully driverless orders at 99% on-time delivery across Texas, Arizona, Arkansas and Canada, and plans mass production with Isuzu at a South Carolina facility targeted for late 2027 to scale from dozens to thousands of trucks.

Freight Tech · Platform Shutdown
DP World confirmed it’s discontinuing SeaRates, the digital freight marketplace it acquired in 2020, saying its "business priorities have evolved." The move follows the May departure of SeaRates founder and CEO Sergey Dzhashytov and raises open questions about the future of DP World’s Digital Freight Alliance forwarder network.
