Jones Act service gets new 10-year port deal

BY STUART CHIRLS · AMERICAN SHIPPER · SEP 4, 2026

Trailer Bridge signed a decade-long stevedoring and terminal-technology agreement with Ports America covering its Jacksonville-to-San Juan barge operations, with two optional five-year extensions that could stretch the deal to 20 years and a new customer-facing visibility tool arriving in 2027.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — Consolidating cargo handling under one experienced ro-ro and Jones Act operator at Blount Island is meant to cut handoffs and tighten service predictability — shippers moving freight into Puerto Rico should see steadier transit windows once Ports America’s Dockworks system is fully running.

Maersk unfurls new sail power for container ship

Maersk will retrofit an 8,700-TEU Lima-class vessel with a 115-foot Anemoi rotor sail for a mid-2027 Atlantic pilot, with each unit expected to save about a ton of fuel and three tons of CO2 emissions per day as part of the carrier’s push toward net-zero by 2040.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — A single rotor sail’s fuel savings are modest next to Maersk’s broader methanol and dual-fuel bets, but a real-world Atlantic pilot is how the technology gets validated at scale — shippers tracking carrier decarbonization commitments should watch whether Maersk expands rotor sails to more vessels after this trial.

102 Dems to STB: Put labor first in UP-NS rail merger review

More than 100 House Democrats led by Rep. Valerie Hoyle, coordinating with the Teamsters Rail Conference, told the Surface Transportation Board to weigh jobs, safety and accountability before clearing the proposed $85 billion Union Pacific-Norfolk Southern merger, joining seven state attorneys general already opposing the deal ahead of a Nov. 18 comment deadline.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — The Teamsters’ pushback on Union Pacific’s ‘lifetime employment’ offer, calling it incomplete, shows labor terms are shaping up as a central fight in this review, not a side issue — shippers watching the merger timeline should expect the labor questions to extend the STB’s process rather than shorten it.
