SONAR Key Market Insights – Memphis
|
The Weighted Rejection Index (WRI), which combines market size with weekly changes in tender rejection rate, shows that the tightening in Memphis has had a greater impact on contributing to tightness in the national freight market in the past week than any other local market.
The Memphis outbound tender rejection rate spiked from less than 10% in mid-January to 22.9% in the past week. The rate spiked similarly during the holiday rush in mid-December.
Those sharp changes show that Memphis is one of the markets most vulnerable to disruption and could be among those most difficult for shippers and brokers to cover as the freight market tightens or during volatile periods.
Consistent with the rise in outbound tender rejection rate, 22% of outbound Memphis lanes are posting above average rate increases, net of those where spot rate changes are below average.

“These strategic sales, paired with targeted land acquisitions, reflect a deliberate ‘trade‑up’ approach: leveraging non‑core assets to secure opportunities that strengthen network capacity, attract rail‑served industries, and position Norfolk Southern for sustained economic and industrial development.”
