After massive Q1 loss, Maersk returns another service to Suez

BY STUART CHIRLS · AMERICAN SHIPPER · AUG 10, 2026

Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd are restoring their AE19 Gemini service to the full Suez Canal–Red Sea route effective immediately, another step back from the Cape of Good Hope diversions carriers adopted after Houthi attacks on shipping began in late 2023.

THE TAKE — Maersk’s Q1 profit fell to $100 million from $1.2 billion a year earlier on softer rates, even as it upgraded full-year guidance in June — shippers routing Asia-Europe cargo should watch whether more Gemini strings follow back through Suez and how quickly transit times compress versus the longer Cape routing.

Sale of major shipping line in U.S. trade on the rocks: Report

Hapag-Lloyd and Israeli private equity firm FIMI’s $4.2 billion deal to acquire Zim Integrated Shipping is running into opposition from a majority of the Israeli government agencies reviewing it, despite buyer concessions on jobs and an Israeli-flagged fleet carve-out.

THE TAKE — Zim’s trans-Pacific volume, roughly 1.6 million containers a year and just over half its freight revenue, means U.S. importers with Zim contracts should watch the rescheduled Sept. 9 inter-agency meeting closely — a blocked deal could leave Zim’s ownership and network commitments in limbo longer than shippers would like.

RAIL · EARNINGS

BNSF earnings rise on higher volume and revenue

BNSF’s second-quarter pretax earnings climbed 13.9% to $2.06 billion on 14.6% revenue growth, with consumer products (intermodal and automotive) up 9.3% on higher West Coast imports and tightening truck capacity, even as fuel costs surged 68%.

THE TAKE — Berkshire’s read that truck capacity is tightening enough to push freight back onto intermodal is worth tracking — if that holds through peak season, shippers who’ve leaned on spot truck capacity may find rail an increasingly competitive option on West Coast import lanes.

Colis Privé expands last-mile delivery business into Spain and Portugal

CMA CGM’s Ceva Logistics has closed its acquisition of Paack’s Iberia and France units, folding roughly 490 employees and Paack’s 82 transfer centers and 5,000-plus pickup points into Colis Privé’s European last-mile network.

THE TAKE — The deal gives Colis Privé an established pickup-point network across two fast-growing e-commerce markets rather than a costly buildout from scratch — expect more last-mile consolidation as carriers chase density in Southern Europe’s parcel growth.

TRADE · CROSS-BORDER

Mexico plans major expansion of busiest cross-border truck crossing

Tamaulipas plans to expand the World Trade Bridge linking Nuevo Laredo and Laredo, Texas — widening the existing span to 10 lanes and adding a parallel 8-lane bridge for 18 total cargo lanes, more than doubling current capacity.

THE TAKE — About half of Mexico’s cross-border cargo already moves through this crossing, and with two-way U.S.-Mexico trade near $405 billion through May, more lanes could meaningfully cut dwell times for automotive, electronics and agribusiness shippers once construction starts later this year.
