In a twist, Charleston volumes dip
|
SONAR Key Market Insights: Charleston, South Carolina
|
Truckload demand in the port market of Charleston, SC has tumbled 7% on a weekly basis — well below the national average’s 1.5% decline.
Still, capacity in the region has an abundance of slack, with tender rejections down 52 basis points over the same period (vs. a national 27-bps uptick).
Though the Port of Charleston was preparing for rapid growth during the COVID boom, the U.S.’ ongoing, multi-front trade war has foiled some of these plans. In September, volume handled at the port fell 1% against year-ago levels.

“China basically said after some pushback in the trade war, no more. If you keep treating us poorly on the trade side, we are going to start cutting off things you care about, and we start with critical minerals.”
