Hi SAN Clients,
Industry Update: NMFTA has introduced changes to the National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC) that took effect on December 6, 2025. These changes impact how bills of lading and shipping documents must be completed to ensure accurate freight charges and compliance.
According to NMFTA:
“To ensure the assessment of correct freight charges and avoid infractions of federal and state laws, shippers should use the proper commodity descriptions and include the NMFC item number, sub-provision (if applicable), class, and item details on all shipping documents. Bills of lading must reflect the exact tariff description, including package type and counts, and show weights and dimensions for each commodity.”
Summary of Changes
- Generic descriptions alone are no longer sufficient
- Missing NMFC data may result in reclassification under Item 26: CBI Inspection of Freight
- Commodity descriptions must match tariff language
- Bills of lading must include item number, class, package type, counts, weight, and dimensions
Recommended Actions
- Review your bills of lading for compliance
- Verify NMFC item numbers and classes
- Include packaging details and full dimensions
- Update documentation processes and training
