US trucking executives are beginning to feel better about the state of the freight economy, hoping tighter capacity will lead to higher rates and, ultimately, an end to the long freight recession.
The increasingly upbeat mood comes as spot dry-van rates, as compiled by DAT Freight and Analytics, remain elevated compared with a year ago, even after the disruptive winter weather of January subsided.

J.B. Hunt ‘a little bit more positive’

Management from J.B. Hunt Transport Services provided upbeat commentary at an investor conference on Tuesday. It said truck capacity has notably tightened, and that demand is trending a little ahead of prior expectations.
“Demand seems to be a little bit more positive than what we were expecting early January,” said Brad Delco, J.B. Hunt’s chief financial officer, at Barclays 43rd Annual Industrial Select Conference in Miami.
DOT Moves to Close Additional 550 CDL Schools

More than 550 commercial driving schools in the U.S. that train truckers and bus drivers must close after investigators found they employed unqualified instructors, failed to adequately test students and had other safety issues, the Transportation Department announced Feb. 18.
