EPA to Proceed With 2027 NOx Rules Timeline

EPA is expected to publish the updated rule in the Federal Register around March or April 2026 and make it available for public comment.
The Environmental Protection Agency will proceed with tightened nitrogen-oxide emissions limits for heavy-duty trucks for the 2027 model year but is open to adjusting certain requirements, American Trucking Associations recently said in a communication to its members.

In 2020, nearly all new trucks in China ran on diesel. By the first half of 2025, battery-powered trucks accounted for 22% of new heavy truck sales, up from 9.2% in the same period in 2024, according to Commercial Vehicle World, a Beijing-based trucking data provider. The British research firm BMI forecasts electric trucks will reach nearly 46% of new sales this year and 60% next year.

The new ruling denied the request to halt SB 253, but will pause the implementation of SB 261 pending the outcome of an appeal, which is currently scheduled for January 2026, which would have come after the first SB 261 reports, but still several months prior to the beginning of reporting under SB 253.
Hyroad Energy partnership aims to boost California’s hydrogen trucking network

Hyroad plans to deploy a portion of its fleet of 113 Nikola FCEV trucks (acquired last August) to service major freight corridors linking the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. As part of the partnership, OneH2—working with Pacific Clean Fuels—is building a hydrogen refueling station in Long Beach that will exclusively supply Hyroad’s trucks.
