“During the fourth quarter, the truckload markets saw demand that was generally stable, but lacking the typical broad base seasonal lift in demand until late in the quarter,” Knight-Swift CEO Adam Miller said during a call with investors. “While we did see some improvement in overall demand and a tightening spot market in December, it was a reduction in available capacity that seemed to be the primary driver of the tightening market.”

A. Duie Pyle buys 43-acre site to develop port-centric LTL and warehousing hub

Earlier this week, West Chester, Penn.-based freight transportation and supply chain services provider A. Duie Pyle bought a Suffolk, Va.-based 43-acre site at Port 460 Logistics Center, with the intention of developing an integrated logistics campus, which will support various service offerings, including warehouse services, LTL cross-dock services, and transloading in the Norfolk, Va. area.

In an appearance on Katie Pavlich Tonight Thursday, Duffy made clear that withholding $200 million in federal funding isn’t the end of this fight. If California doesn’t come into compliance on the non-domiciled CDL issue, Duffy said, “we will eventually pull their ability to issue commercial driver’s licenses to anybody in California.”
Federal Agents Take Aim at ‘Cabotage’ in Arizona

In December, agents from the Department of Homeland Security raided an Arizona trucking company suspected of participating in cabotage, the term used when foreign-registered commercial truck drivers operating with valid visas for delivery of cross-border freight instead remain in the U.S. to haul domestic loads. Cabotage is a violation of federal law.

Cutting wages is not seen as a viable option for many fleets, said Greg Richardson, vice president of human resources at less-than-truckload hauler Estes Express Lines.
“Driving resources remain scarce,” Richardson said, noting that Estes has continued wage increases despite the soft freight market, prioritizing retention and stability. “The increases over time really are a ‘thank you’ for the hard work our employees put in every single day to take care of our customers.”
