The "semi" in semi truck is short for semi-trailer. It refers specifically to the attached trailer rather than the truck itself.

Unlike a "full trailer" that has wheels on both the front and back to support its own weight, a semi-trailer only has wheels at the back. The front is supported by the towing engine (the tractor) via a hitch. Therefore, the trailer is only "semi-supported" by its own wheels.
