Updated Tariffs on Steel, Aluminum and Copper

On June 1, 2026, President Trump issued a proclamation modifying tariffs applicable to certain steel, aluminum, and copper-related products. The changes, as detailed in the annexes to the proclamation, will become effective on June 8, 2026.

Key provisions include:

  • Reduction in Agricultural Equipment Tariffs: Tariffs on designated agricultural equipment, including combines and harvesters, have been reduced from 25% to 15%.

  • Expansion of Covered Industrial Equipment: The scope of industrial equipment subject to a 15% tariff has been expanded to include mobile machinery, such as bulldozers and forklifts, when imported from countries eligible under applicable trade agreements.

  • Clarification of Derivative Products: The proclamation clarifies that certain goods, including aluminum lithographic plates and steel racks, are classified as derivative products of aluminum and steel, respectively, and are therefore subject to applicable tariff measures.

  • Incentive for U.S.-Sourced Metals: A preferential 10% duty rate has been introduced for qualifying capital equipment containing at least 85% U.S.-produced steel and/or aluminum by weight. That is steel which is melted and poured, and aluminum that is smelted and cast, within the United States.

  • Duration of Measures: These tariff adjustments are temporary and will remain in effect through December 31, 2027. The stated objective is to promote near-term investment and support the rebuilding of the domestic industrial base.
