CooperVision contact lens shipment stranded on disabled Amazon cargo jet

BY ERIC KULISCH · AMERICAN SHIPPER · SEP 11, 2026

More than 32,000 pounds of CooperVision contact lenses remain in limbo aboard the 21 Air Boeing 767-300 that overran the runway at Miami International last Sunday after an overly fast approach, an accident that killed five ground workers and has already drawn a wrongful death lawsuit against Amazon, even as CooperVision says the stranded cargo is only a small slice of its total inventory.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — A wrongful death suit naming Amazon directly, not just the airline operator, signals plaintiffs’ attorneys see enough control over 21 Air’s operations to go after the brand behind the cargo — shippers using Amazon’s air network for time-sensitive freight should watch how liability gets allocated here, since it could reshape how carrier contracts get structured industrywide.

DHL augments facility’s parcel capacity in northwest Germany

DHL officially opened an expansion at its Cologne-Eifeltor parcel center that lifts sorting capacity to nearly 50,000 pieces an hour and adds 250 jobs for a total of 750 workers, part of the company’s broader plan to spend more than 1 billion euros a year modernizing its network, with only DHL’s Munich hub now handling more volume nationwide.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — Building in solar panels, LED lighting and a green roof alongside the capacity boost shows DHL treating sustainability upgrades as standard practice on new builds, not an add-on — shippers using DHL’s German network should see this as one data point in a much larger yearly reinvestment cycle rather than an isolated capacity fix.

Port of Los Angeles posts record 2.9M TEUs, eyes strong finish to 2026

The Port of Los Angeles moved 955,907 container units in August to close out its busiest three-month stretch on record at more than 2.9 million TEUs for June through August, pushing year-to-date volume up 1.5% to just over 7 million TEUs even as loaded exports fell 9% year-over-year to 115,561 TEUs.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — A record import quarter paired with export volume still sliding is the same imbalance that’s been building all year — shippers relying on LA for import capacity should expect continued strength through year-end, but the export-side weakness means backhaul options out of Southern California stay tight.

Warehouse facility in Toledo, Ohio

Spartan Logistics expands warehouse footprint through acquisition

Spartan Logistics acquired Allen Logistics, adding 100,000 square feet of warehouse space in Toledo and bringing the Columbus-based 3PL to 11 Ohio locations and 4.5 million square feet across nine states, combining Allen’s roughly 50-tractor fleet with Spartan’s existing warehousing and fulfillment network; financial terms weren’t disclosed.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — A regional 3PL doubling down on a single metro like Toledo, rather than chasing a new geography, suggests Spartan sees more value in deepening existing lanes than expanding its footprint — shippers already working with Spartan in the Midwest should benefit from tighter capacity in that corridor sooner than customers elsewhere in its network.
