Canada plans to extend the steel tariff rate quota (TRQ) system

The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Finance and National Revenue, announced the government will be extending key steel and aluminum tariff measures for one year.

Pending Governor in Council approval, Canada plans to extend the steel tariff‑rate quota (TRQ) system for imports from non‑CUSMA countries, along with existing tariff relief for eligible U.S. steel and aluminum products and for steel products subject to derivative tariffs.

These measures would be extended to June 27 and June 30, 2027, respectively.

TRQ volumes would remain set at 20% of 2024 import levels for countries without a free trade agreement with Canada and 75% for those with one. Imports above quota would continue to face a 50% tariff. The United States and Mexico would remain exempt under CUSMA.

Alongside these extensions, the government will consult Canadian producers to ensure remission processes continue to support a competitive domestic steel market.

Importers are reminded that shipment specific import permits can be requested up to fifteen (15) days of the goods arrival and should follow established permit procedures.

Concerns or questions should be directed to our Canadian regulatory team.
