DOT approves UPS transfer of Hong Kong routes to Philippines

BY ERIC KULISCH · AMERICAN SHIPPER · AUG 18, 2026

The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved UPS’s request to shift six Hong Kong flying rights from Poland and Vietnam to Clark Airport in the Philippines, giving the carrier its first direct Hong Kong-Philippines freighter service using Boeing 767-300s.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — UPS is one of only a handful of carriers holding fifth-freedom cargo rights into Hong Kong, and this reshuffle shows how quickly capacity gets reallocated toward growth lanes — shippers moving freight through Clark should watch for more competitive service now that UPS, not just FedEx, is flying the route.

New choices: BNSF expands intermodal rail option between Phoenix and North Texas

BNSF now runs its Phoenix-to-Dallas/Fort Worth intermodal service six days a week with a roughly three-day transit, part of a push to convert truck freight to rail ahead of peak season and ahead of a second Phoenix-area intermodal facility opening in early 2027.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — More frequent, faster intermodal service on this lane gives Southwest shippers a real alternative to over-the-road capacity heading into peak — worth pricing out against truck rates now, especially with Logistics Park Phoenix adding capacity next year.

Life Couriers gains new CEO with sale to private equity firm

Private equity firm JLL Partners has acquired Munich-based healthcare logistics specialist Life Couriers and installed former Kuehne+Nagel Quick Group chief Edward DeMartini as CEO, betting on a healthcare logistics market projected to roughly double to $503 billion by 2034.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — Big integrators like DHL, FedEx and UPS already pull in about $10 billion apiece from healthcare logistics; private equity money chasing specialists like Life Couriers signals shippers of temperature-sensitive pharma and gene therapies should expect more consolidation — and potentially service changes — among niche healthcare carriers.

Customs to fight this growing trade fraud with AI ‘detective border’

A White House trade report flags illegal transshipment of China-linked goods through more than 40 countries as a major tariff-evasion scheme, estimating $40 billion to $303 billion in annual exposure, and proposes an AI-powered ‘Detective Border’ system to flag high-risk shipments using anomaly detection and computer vision.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — Shippers sourcing through Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico or other named transshipment hubs should expect more scrutiny of country-of-origin documentation as this system rolls out — legitimate manufacturing investment in these countries could get caught up in the same enforcement net as fraudulent pass-through trade.

ID Logistics settles claim of Covid loan fraud for $2.6M

ID Logistics US will pay $2.36 million to settle allegations it falsely certified having fewer than 500 employees to qualify for a Paycheck Protection Program loan during the pandemic, after a whistleblower who will receive $236,200 flagged the application.

THE TAKE — THE TAKE — With ID Logistics still posting 18% revenue growth and 46% growth in North America, the settlement is a reminder that PPP-era compliance issues are still surfacing years later — contract logistics providers should expect continued DOJ scrutiny of pandemic-relief claims regardless of how the business has since grown.
