The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has intensified enforcement across the trucking industry, targeting the schemes and compliance failures that put highway safety at risk. From chameleon carriers sidestepping safety regulations to fraudulent CDL credentials, noncompliant training providers, English-language proficiency violations and ELD manipulation, the agency is moving to close loopholes that bad actors have exploited for years.

FMCSA Administrator Derek Barrs joins Seth Clevenger to examine the agency’s expanding enforcement priorities, the methods being used to identify bad actors, and what the industry should expect as oversight increases.

Derek Barrs serves as the Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Nominated by President Donald J. Trump on March 25, 2025, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 7, 2025, he leads the agency’s mission to enhance commercial motor vehicle safety.

With nearly 35 years of experience in law enforcement and roadway safety, including more than 25 years focused on commercial motor vehicle safety, Barrs has built a distinguished career at the local, state, and national levels.
