Logistics
BY ERIC KULISCH · AMERICAN SHIPPER · OCTOBER 19, 2026
DHL Group raised its 2026 earnings and free cash flow forecasts on strength in its express unit, expecting EBIT above 7 billion euros and a robust peak shipping season.
THE TAKE — Express did the heavy lifting, with adjusted operating profit up nearly 50% on better yields, cost efficiencies and a more selective approach to heavy airfreight, helped by a tight air market. The weaker spots are worth noting: DHL eCommerce’s profit fell sharply, though last year included a one-time gain, and Post & Parcel Germany declined 32%. Raising capital spending to about $4 billion signals management expects the strength to continue into next year.

Ocean
WiseTech’s October Ocean Freight Risk Outlook says Asia–North America bookings will stay hard to secure as carriers cut planned capacity and on-time performance fell to 26.9% in September.
THE TAKE — The notable detail is WiseTech’s view that the tightness comes from reduced planned capacity rather than stronger demand, which means easing volumes may not quickly translate into easier bookings. On-time performance has fallen sharply on Asia–Europe too, to 9.9%, but there the problem is delivery execution rather than finding space. WiseTech’s practical advice — book early against contracted allocations, add time to delivery commitments and compare carriers on reliability — matters because the gap between top carriers is wide.

Air Cargo
Air Canada is extending its Boeing 767 freighter network from Toronto to Amsterdam, Monterrey and Panama City, with service starting in late October.
THE TAKE — The expansion follows a strong first half, with cargo revenue up 16% to $413 million on higher yields and international pricing helped by fuel-driven surcharges. Adding Amsterdam alongside its passenger flights gives the carrier a dedicated European freighter link, while Monterrey and Panama City deepen its reach into Latin America with a six-aircraft fleet. The test is whether those yields hold once surcharge support fades.

Parcel
Ceva Logistics merged its French last-mile unit Colis Privé into recently acquired Paack, creating a single Paack-branded network delivering 150 million parcels a year with 17,000 out-of-home delivery points.
THE TAKE — The structure flipped from the original plan, with Paack absorbing Colis Privé rather than the reverse, which suggests Ceva values Paack’s technology for planning, tracking and returns management more than its legacy brand. The merger fits parent CMA CGM’s push to build an integrated logistics business that owns more of the delivery chain. Customers will see the unified brand roll out starting in January.

Ocean
Matson christened the Makua at Hanwha Philly Shipyard, the first of three roughly 3,600-TEU Aloha Class ships due to serve its Hawaii and China–Long Beach Express routes.
THE TAKE — The Makua is the first of three Jones Act-compliant vessels delivering between Q1 2027 and Q2 2028, and unlike earlier Aloha Class ships these are built LNG-ready with dual-fuel engines rather than needing later modifications. That matters for a carrier whose domestic trades are protected but whose fleet still has to meet tightening emissions expectations. With Hanwha Philly one of the few U.S. yards building large containerships, the order also underscores how scarce domestic capacity is.
