IMPORTANT UPDATE: Updated List of U.S. Products Subject to Canadian Counter Tariffs Effective September 8, 2026

The Government of Canada has announced updated counter tariff measures in response to recent U.S. trade actions.

Over the past several months, Canada engaged in intensive and good-faith negotiations with the United States to reach a mutually beneficial trade arrangement. According to the Government of Canada, the concessions requested by the U.S. were not considered fair or economically sound and would have undermined the interests of Canadian workers, businesses, and the broader economy.

Following the U.S. decision to impose a 50 per cent tariff on $27.6 billion worth of Canadian goods, effective August 22, 2026, the Prime Minister announced that Canada would respond by matching the U.S. Section 338 tariffs on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

As a result, new Canadian counter tariffs on $27.6 billion of U.S. imports will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8, 2026.

The updated countermeasures target products imported from the United States across several sectors, including:

·      Steel and aluminum

·      Dairy products

·      Household appliances

·      Agricultural equipment

·      Pulp and paper

·      Plastics

·      Electronics

In some sectors, particularly steel and aluminum, existing Canadian counter tariffs will increase from 25 per cent to 50 per cent to align with U.S. tariff rates.

Other existing Canadian counter tariffs, including those applied to U.S. automobiles, will remain in effect.

What this means

Importers, exporters, and businesses with supply chains involving affected U.S. products should review the updated tariff measures and assess any potential impacts on sourcing, pricing, and customs compliance ahead of the September 8 implementation date.
