Major Tariff Relief on U.S. Goods imported into Canada – Effective September 1, 2025
The Government of Canada has announced a significant update for importers: effective September 1, 2025, the 25% counter tariffs on a broad range of goods imported from the United States have been officially lifted.
This important policy change impacts:
- $14.2 billion in goods previously subject to tariffs since March 13, 2025
- $30 billion in goods previously subject to tariffs since March 4, 2025
These adjustments represent a substantial rollback of the retaliatory tariffs introduced earlier this year, originally applied across 1,814 tariff classifications. As of now, only 313 tariff lines primarily related to steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain subject to countermeasures.
Strengthening CUSMA Commitments
Canada’s decision aligns with the spirit of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). In recognition of the US’s approach to allow most Canadian goods to enter tariff-free, Canada is reciprocating by removing counter tariffs on 1,501 tariff classifications.
To benefit from this exemption, importers must ensure their goods are CUSMA-certified.
Tariffs Still in Effect
While this move eases trade for many sectors, tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles remain in place.
These categories are excluded from the exemption due to ongoing U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports, which currently do not provide relief for CUSMA-compliant goods.
Negotiations between Canada and the U.S. are ongoing, and updates will be shared as they become available.
