OOCL revenue up 45.1% on trans-Pacific surge
OOCL reported third-quarter liner revenue of $3.28 billion, up 45.1% from a year earlier, according to Stuart Chirls’ reporting on an Oct. 9 operational update from parent Orient Overseas (International) Ltd. Volume was 2.12 million TEUs in the quarter ended Sept. 30, up 9%, and average liner revenue per TEU rose 33.1%. Loadable capacity rose 3.6%. OOIL is majority-owned by China’s Cosco Shipping Holdings.
The trans-Pacific led. Revenue there jumped 71.8% to $1.44 billion from $837.9 million, on volume up 13.1% to 595,139 TEUs. Asia-Europe revenue rose 45% to $695.8 million, with volume up 15.4% to 399,162 TEUs, the fastest growth of any region. Intra-Asia and Australasia was the largest trade by volume at 981,336 TEUs, with revenue up 23.7% to $947.6 million. Trans-Atlantic revenue rose 11.9% to $201.8 million on volume up 7.3% to 147,008 TEUs. Revenue growth exceeded volume growth in every region.
For the first nine months of 2026, liner revenue was $7.96 billion, up 18.9% from $6.70 billion, on 6.25 million TEUs, up 6.5%. Average liner revenue per TEU is up 11.6% for the period, and trans-Pacific revenue is $3.16 billion, up 27%. The update did not identify the market conditions behind the gains and included no earnings or expense figures.
Revenue per TEU, up 33.1%, did more of the work than volume, up 9%, and the trans-Pacific was the biggest contributor. With no earnings in the update, the effect on profit is not yet visible.
1 million boxes set new Los Angeles port record
The Port of Los Angeles handled a record 1,042,652 TEUs in September, its busiest month in its 118-year history, according to Stuart Chirls’ reporting. September topped the previous monthly record, set in July 2025, by more than 20,000 TEUs. Loaded imports reached 545,696 TEUs, up 19% year over year, and loaded exports rose 10% to 125,751 TEUs. Empty-container volume of approximately 371,206 TEUs was the highest monthly total in port history. July through September was the port’s busiest quarter at nearly 3 million TEUs, and the first nine months of 2026 total nearly 8.1 million TEUs, more than 3% ahead of last year. Executive Director Gene Seroka said, "September was a month for the record books, and it was part of an extraordinary run for the Port of Los Angeles."
Seroka credited resilient consumer demand, inventory replenishment and shippers shifting freight to Los Angeles amid problems on other global trade routes. He also said tariffs have fallen from earlier-2026 levels, giving importers more cost certainty.
Netradyne expands AI Agent lineup for fleet safety teams
Netradyne, the San Diego-based driver safety and fleet management company, expanded the AI agents on its Netradyne Intelligence platform, according to Thomas Wasson’s reporting. The update adds a Campaign Agent for driver coaching, a builder that lets fleet managers create their own agents, and conversational answers drawn from live fleet data, available to direct customers in the U.S. and Canada. Netradyne Intelligence launched in June 2026, built on more than 30 billion miles and 150 billion minutes of real-world driving data, and customers created more than 250 agents within a month of release. The Campaign Agent lets managers set safety priorities and driver groups, then handles scoring, daily standings and driver updates. Netradyne will demonstrate the capabilities at the ATA Management Conference & Exhibition, Oct. 17-20 in Charlotte, N.C.
The update moves the platform from ready-made agents toward agents that fleets build themselves. The Campaign Agent and builder are limited to direct customers in the U.S. and Canada.
Mexico trucker shortages, visa restrictions squeeze cross-border capacity
TRAFFIX’s October North American Cross-Border Index came in at 57 for Canada and 54 for Mexico, each down one point from September, according to Noi Mahoney’s reporting. Readings above 50 indicate tighter conditions. TRAFFIX executives say driver shortages, trade restrictions and higher financing costs could keep rates elevated into 2027. The SONAR Outbound Tender Volume Index for Laredo rose from 39.95 in mid-September to 51.95 as of Oct. 11, and C.H. Robinson’s Edge Report says U.S. authorities withdrew visas from about 25,000 Mexican freight drivers, citing CANACAR. TRAFFIX’s Alex Fuller said, "rates are going to stay higher for longer." Lance Halliday said rates on some corridors rose 25% to 35% over roughly the past month to month and a half.
Halliday said, "I don’t think that there’s any way that this changes over the next three to six months." Patricio Gutierrez of TRAFFIX said, "The shortage of drivers in Mexico is a real problem."
Freight Fraud Awareness Day returns as strategic cargo theft reshapes trucking
Freight Fraud Awareness Day returns Oct. 14, the third annual campaign since the first in October 2024, with a focus on education, awareness and advocacy, according to Phil Brink’s reporting. Supporters include Verified Carrier, Truckstop, Northland Insurance, Travelers, GenLogs, FreightValidate and Freight Bites. The FBI’s Memphis Cargo Theft Task Force warned that cyber-enabled schemes let criminals identify valuable shipments before pickup. Verified Carrier’s Andrey Drotenko called the day "a moment to slow down, compare notes, and just act together." SPG Cargo & Logistics’ Gary Thomas said the industry went from "a traditional bad guy waiting at the truck stop" to criminals who can "digitally manipulate somebody’s identity and the supply chain."
Earlier cases mostly involved physical theft of merchandise, while newer schemes rely more on fraud. Participants can discuss incidents without revealing safeguards that criminals might exploit.
