LTL, truckload market see positive signs in a soft environment

September Truck Tonnage Slips After Best Month Since 2023

“Tonnage levels remain choppy, but they are up 2.1% since hitting a low in January,” said ATA Chief Economist Bob Costello. “Compared to the high three years earlier, however, truck tonnage is still off by 3.9%. In fact, September’s tonnage level was essentially the same as in September 2023, underscoring the tough freight market over the last few years.”

The rebranding is the next step in the development of Knight-Swift as a coast-to-coast LTL provider, with terminals in most US regions except the Northeast.
“The consolidated branding recognizes that we are already one business operating seamlessly on one system through one network,” Miller said during an earnings call.

Keith Prather, Armada Corporate Intelligence Managing Director, explained that the truck tariffs are not surprising, as they are in line with automotive sector duties, with the bigger issue for the truck makers is whether they can get a tariff break on their components—calling it an incentive to source USMCA-compliant parts.
What’s more, Prather estimated that roughly 8% of the total U.S. Class 8 trucks sector would be subject to the new tariffs, in turn, pushing the average cost of a tractor from around $175,000 to around $250,000, not including discounting, which he said could drive that number down and soften the blow.
