Beginning July 19th, The National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA) is rolling out changes to its freight classification system that may impact how your LTL freight is classified and rated.
Updates include:
- Expanding the list of commodities classified by density
- Adding two new classes to all Full-Scale density-based items for LTL freight
- Requiring some shippers to calculate the density (dimensions and weight) of their shipments to determine class
- Adding a hand symbol to certain items to indicate special handling, stowability, or liability considerations, even though their freight classes remain unchanged
Why it matters: Understanding how these changes may affect your freight classifications and shipping practices now can help you avoid misclassifications, pricing discrepancies, and possible delays down the road.
To help you prepare, the NMFTA website offers official guidance and helpful resources, including a free NMFC Item Lookup Tool that helps you identify which of your LTL freight item classifications are changing.
We’re here to support you through this transition, so be sure to reach out to your account manager if you have any questions or need help accessing NMFTA’s resources. |
