Attention Canadian Importers
The Canadian government, following the recent announcement by Prime Minister Carney, has indicated that surtax relief will be available for certain goods starting September 1, 2025, HOWEVER the official regulations and detailed guidelines have not yet been provided.
This means that while the relief is expected to be implemented on that date, the precise criteria, documentation requirements, and assessment procedures remain unavailable at this time.
What does this mean for you?
1. Stay Engaged and Alert:
- Initiate discussions with your vendors and supply chain partners now to prepare for potential eligibility and compliance under CUSMA.
2. Prepare for Rapid Implementation:
- Assess your current inventories and upcoming shipments of goods proposed to be affected under the proposed relief measure. Please note that, based on current understanding, steel, aluminum, and automotive products are not expected to be included in the scope of this implementation.
3. Monitor Official Announcements:
- We will continue to closely follow government updates and communications.
- As soon as the regulations are published, we will provide detailed guidance on eligibility, documentation, and compliance procedures necessary to benefit from surtax relief.
4. Engage with Willson:
- Ensure your compliance teams are ready to review and implement new procedures once regulations are available.
Next Steps:
- Proactively contact your vendors and import partners to build awareness and readiness for September 1st, even in the absence of final rules.
- Prepare your documentation and supply chain plans so you can act swiftly when official guidance is announced.
We will continue to monitor developments closely and will share updates and be ready to act quickly once the official regulation is released
