Global container volumes hit record 17.46 million TEUs

BY STUART CHIRLS · AMERICAN SHIPPER · OCTOBER 8, 2026

Container Trades Statistics says global volume reached a record 17.46 million TEUs in August, while its price index climbed to its highest level since July 2024.

THE TAKE — Record volume paired with a price index about 50% above January shows that capacity, not just demand, is driving the market — CTS ties the price rise to rerouting and disruption that have tightened effective supply since late February. The regional picture is uneven, with Asia exports up 8% and sub-Saharan Africa imports up 13% while the Indian Sub-Continent and Middle East is the lone region shrinking. CTS’s own caution that month-to-month growth is slowing is the line to watch heading into the fourth quarter.

Ports

New monthly mark for Savannah container volume

The Port of Savannah handled a record 504,015 TEUs in September, up 3.7% from a year earlier, as strong consumer spending and Asian port delays pulled peak-season cargo forward.

THE TAKE — The typhoon-related delays that pushed shipments into September suggest part of this record is timing rather than a new baseline, so October numbers will tell more. Still, a fiscal first quarter above 1.5 million TEUs and 13% growth at the Appalachian Regional Port point to inland demand holding up. Weakness in Brunswick’s roll-on/roll-off cargo, down 22% on tariff and interest-rate pressure on vehicle sales, is a reminder that Georgia’s gains are concentrated in containers.

Samsung seeks $186M from CMA CGM in container charges dispute

Samsung Electronics America asked the Federal Maritime Commission to order CMA CGM to pay at least $186 million over demurrage, detention and rail storage charges tied to pandemic-era store-door shipments.

THE TAKE — The complaint’s core allegation — that the carrier switched some store-door shipments to container-yard service without approval, leaving the shipper to arrange inland moves — is the kind of service-level argument that could matter well beyond this one case. With more than 121,000 charges at issue, the sheer scale shows how much pandemic-era congestion left unresolved between shippers and carriers. CMA CGM’s response that Covid-era conditions explain the disputes sets up a fight over whether exceptional circumstances excuse contractual obligations.

Rail

Climbing intermodal rail volumes more than treble commodities traffic gains

U.S. railroads moved 529,712 carloads and intermodal units in the week ended Oct. 3, up 5.1%, with intermodal rising 7.4% against a 2.4% gain in carloads, according to the AAR.

THE TAKE — Intermodal growing roughly three times as fast as carloads fits the picture painted elsewhere in today’s edition: record container volumes are flowing inland. Carload strength is narrower, led by metallic ores and petroleum, while grain and coal slipped. With intermodal up 4.2% over the first 39 weeks, rail’s volume story this year is being written by containers rather than commodities.
