On July 10, 2025, President Trump sent a letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney stating that the US is prepared to impose a 35% tariff on Canadian goods, effective 12:01am EST on August 1, 2025.
The letter to the Prime Minister expresses not only concerns about fentanyl but also trade deficits and barriers which are the basis for reciprocal tariffs on other countries.
On July 11, President Trump appeared to leave open the possibility that USMCA goods will remain exempt from a higher 35% tariff on Canada that he announced on July 10.
